Diyarbakır Metropolitan Municipality Co-Mayor Serra Bucak inspected the ongoing works at Naturapark and Mezopotamya City Park, which are being developed to increase the city’s green space and provide residents with new living spaces surrounded by nature.

During the inspections, Co-Mayor Bucak was accompanied by Diyarbakır Metropolitan Municipality Council Co-Spokesperson Ayhan Karatekin, municipal council members and the heads of the relevant departments.

Touring the project sites, Co-Mayor Bucak received detailed information from the technical teams on the latest progress, work schedules and infrastructure works. Co-Mayor Bucak called on the relevant municipal departments to ensure that the projects are completed within the planned timeframe, to high standards and in a way that meets the needs of residents.

Works Progress Simultaneously at Mezopotamya City Park

Co-Mayor Bucak and the accompanying delegation first inspected Mezopotamya City Park, currently under construction at the intersection of Diclekent Boulevard and Mezopotamya Boulevard.

Developed by the Department of Parks and Gardens across a total area of 211,656 square metres, Mezopotamya City Park has been designed as a green and social space for residents of all ages. The project is planned to include a café, an open-air library, public toilets and various social amenities.

The structural works on the buildings within the park and the infrastructure works have been completed, while the earth filling works are also nearing completion. Electrical infrastructure and irrigation systems are being installed in line with the work schedule, while laying and compaction works on hard-surfaced areas, kerb installation and the pouring of concrete for pathways are being carried out simultaneously at different locations.

Once the works are completed, the park’s social amenities, pedestrian paths and other areas will be ready for public use.

Naturapark Takes Shape Across 300,000 Square Metres

Following her inspection of Mezopotamya City Park, Co-Mayor Bucak proceeded to the Naturapark site, currently under construction at the intersection of Prof. Dr. Necmettin Erbakan Boulevard and Fırat Boulevard.

The 300,000-square-metre Naturapark project, being developed by the Department of Parks and Gardens, is being built as one of the city’s largest green spaces, featuring biological ponds, an inclusive and accessible design, an ecological approach that preserves the existing vegetation, and a range of social amenities.

While infrastructure and site development works continue throughout the park, excavation of the biological pond, the pond plant room and the vacuum chamber has been completed. Excavation and sub-base filling works for the cycle path are continuing, alongside foundation excavations and works on stormwater drainage lines, electrical infrastructure and irrigation systems.

Biological Ponds to Self-Clean through Natural Filtration

Naturapark will feature biological ponds that will self-clean through beneficial organisms and natural filtration systems without the use of chemicals such as chlorine. Water in the ponds will be purified using aquatic plants such as water lilies in the regeneration zone, small fish introduced into the water, and natural materials such as gravel.

To protect the existing trees within the project area, the locations of walking and cycling paths and biological ponds have also been redesigned to prevent damage to the trees. As part of these adjustments, the distances between certain walking and cycling paths have been reduced or increased, the biological ponds have been repositioned, and the pond alignment has been redrawn to avoid existing trees. In this way, the project area has been shaped around the locations of existing trees without removing them, with adjustments made to preserve the natural character of the site.

Accessible Design Takes Centre Stage

Naturapark is intended to contribute to a culture of ecological living. By opting for nature-friendly biological ponds instead of conventional chlorinated pools with high energy consumption, the project aims both to support the ecosystem and reduce energy consumption.

The park is being designed with an approach that ensures accessibility not only for children but for all residents. As part of the project, existing trees will be preserved and the vegetation will be enriched with new plants.

Cycling and Walking Paths to Be Built

Cycling and walking paths will be created throughout the park to promote healthy living. Fitness equipment will also be installed along the walking routes to provide residents with opportunities to exercise.

Once Naturapark and Mezopotamya City Park are completed, Diyarbakır is expected to gain two new sustainable, modern and nature-friendly living spaces for residents of all ages.
