Co-Mayor Bucak: “Let’s Strengthen Our Vigil for Justice and Remembrance Together”
Diyarbakır Metropolitan Municipality Co-Mayor Serra Bucak joined the vigil for justice and remembrance launched in response to femicides. “We call on young women, university students and all women in Amed: let’s strengthen this solidarity, this act of remembrance, this act of keeping their memory alive, together,” she said.
Organised by the Network Against Violence outside Diyarbakır Courthouse to draw attention to femicides and stand against the mechanisms of violence perpetuated by the male-dominated system, the vigil for justice and remembrance has entered its fourth week. Co-Mayor Serra Bucak, district municipality co-mayors, representatives of civil society organisations and numerous women joined the vigil in solidarity.
The action will take place at the same time every Tuesday for ten weeks. It aims to ensure that women who have been murdered are remembered not merely as statistics, but through their names, lives and stories.
‘Femicide Is Not an Isolated Incident’
A joint press statement declared: “The systematic targeting of women constitutes femicide; these killings are not isolated incidents but a consequence of the male-dominated system.”
Emphasising that remembrance means more than simply recalling the past and also entails defending women's right to life, the statement called for women to be protected while they are alive, their applications for help to be taken seriously, and the state to fulfil its duty to protect them in full.
During the vigil, the stories of women murdered in Türkiye between 18 and 26 October were read aloud.
Co-Mayor Bucak: ‘Let’s Strengthen This Action Together’
Speaking at the event, Co-Mayor Serra Bucak stressed the importance of the vigil and said the call made by women's institutions and organisations was clear and unequivocal.
Noting that they were gathered outside the institution responsible for ensuring that perpetrators are held accountable and investigations are conducted properly, Co-Mayor Bucak called on women to join the vigil outside Diyarbakır Courthouse every Tuesday at 12.30 pm.
She continued:
“We want to keep this action going, with more and more people joining us every week. We call on young women, university students and all women in Amed: let’s strengthen this solidarity, this act of remembrance, this act of keeping their memory alive, together. Thank you all for joining us.”
