Co-Mayor Bucak Meets Women Producers

Diyarbakır Metropolitan Municipality Co-Mayor Serra Bucak visited the Women’s Communal Urban Gardens and met with women producers, stressing the importance of both supporting women’s participation in production and enabling them to build strong networks of solidarity among themselves.

Diyarbakır Metropolitan Municipality Co-Mayor Serra Bucak visited the Women’s Communal Urban Gardens, established by the Metropolitan Municipality to strengthen women’s economic participation, preserve local seed varieties and promote ecological production.

Co-Mayor Bucak toured the gardens, examined the produce being grown and took part in the harvest. She also spoke individually with women producers and received information about the activities under way. Bucak emphasised the importance of supporting women’s participation in production while also strengthening networks of solidarity among women.

A Culture of Solidarity Among Women Is Growing

Located within the Department of Rural Services complex in the Talaytepe neighbourhood of Kayapınar district, the gardens were established under the leadership of the Department of Women’s Policies. They contribute to preserving local seed varieties, promoting ecological production and strengthening a culture of solidarity among women.

Aim to Expand Production to Larger Areas

As part of the project, medicinal and aromatic plants are grown alongside vegetables in the gardens. At the initial stage, women use the produce harvested from the gardens to meet their household needs. Drawing on the experience and technical knowledge they gain through the project, they aim to expand production to larger areas in the future and play a more active role in the city’s economy.

During the visit, Co-Mayor Bucak was accompanied by Diyarbakır Metropolitan Municipality Deputy Chief Executive Zerin Türk, municipal council members and the heads of the relevant departments.
