Disaster Awareness Training Delivered to Students and Teachers
Diyarbakır Metropolitan Municipality delivered fire safety training and disaster awareness sessions, alongside an earthquake drill, for students and teachers as part of 13 October, the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction.
The Department of Disaster Affairs and Risk Management organised the training at Yenişehir Primary School to mark the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction. The programme was attended by students and teachers and included fire safety training, disaster awareness sessions and an earthquake drill.
As part of the training, students received practical guidance on responding to disasters, what to do during an earthquake, emergency evacuation procedures and initial responses to fires. After the training, sirens were sounded and students and teachers safely evacuated their classrooms and assembled in the schoolyard. They were then shown how to use fire extinguishers to tackle potential fires.
Importance of Disaster Preparedness Emphasised
The training highlighted the importance of being prepared before a disaster and taking the right actions during one to reduce loss of life and property damage. Disaster awareness sessions aim to inform the public about what to do before, during and after disasters and to improve preparedness for emergencies.
Following the training, which was also attended by Azad Yıldız, Head of the Department of Disaster Affairs and Risk Management, brochures containing information on disaster awareness were distributed to students and teachers.
Training to Continue at Other Schools
Diyarbakır Metropolitan Municipality will continue its training and awareness-raising activities to promote disaster awareness across society, strengthen the preparedness of children and educators, and help create a safer city.
The disaster awareness training programme, delivered under a protocol with the Provincial Directorate of National Education, will continue at other schools in the coming days.
