Diyarbakır’s Culinary Heritage Brought to Life at Historic Venues

Diyarbakır Metropolitan Municipality will organise a series of gastronomy workshops from 19 September to 4 October to showcase the city’s rich culinary heritage and local flavours. Held at some of the city’s key historic and cultural venues, the workshops will explore traditional dishes and flavours alongside fermentation, sourdough, zero-waste cooking and traditional local sherbets.

The Gastronomy and Branding Unit, operating under Diyarbakır Metropolitan Municipality’s Department of Culture, Arts and Social Affairs, is organising workshops to showcase the city’s rich culinary heritage and local flavours. Taking place from 19 September to 4 October, the workshops will be held at some of Diyarbakır’s key historic and cultural venues. Covering a range of topics, the workshops will explore traditional dishes and flavours alongside fermentation, sourdough, zero-waste cooking and traditional local sherbets.

Passing on Culinary Heritage to Future Generations

The events aim to highlight local produce and traditional preparation methods that have an important place in Diyarbakır’s culinary heritage, pass the city’s culinary traditions on to future generations and promote its cultural heritage.

Highlighting Basil Sherbet and Traditional Dishes

The programme will also highlight sherbet and dishes made with basil, one of the city’s prominent aromatic plants. A Basil Sherbet Workshop will be held at the Viewing Terrace in Millet Garden next to the Hz. Süleyman Mosque on Sunday, 4 October.

Following the workshop, a Basil Night will be held at the same venue at 18.00, with invited guests in attendance. The evening will feature a presentation of traditional dishes prepared with basil, as well as a talk and a dengbêj performance.

The workshops will be open to the public and free of charge. The Basil Night on 4 October will be by invitation only.
