Diyarbakır Metropolitan Municipality Co-Mayors Serra Bucak and Doğan Hatun visited municipal departments in Rennes as part of their engagements in France, examining work on accessibility, multicultural municipal governance and cultural transformation projects.
The Co-Mayors first met with the City of Rennes’ Disability and Accessibility Department, where officials briefed them on accessibility measures implemented across the city and services provided for disabled residents.
Work on Rennes’ multicultural fabric shared
The Co-Mayors then visited Rennes’ Languages and Culture Department. Discussions focused on work addressing the city’s multicultural social fabric, while the Co-Mayors shared in detail Diyarbakır Metropolitan Municipality’s multilingual municipal governance approach.
Transformation of Jacques-Cartier Prison
As part of their programme, the Co-Mayors also received information on one of the city’s major cultural transformation projects: the conversion of the Jacques-Cartier Prison into a Culture and Citizenship Centre.
The building, which functioned as a prison between 1903 and 2010 and was purchased by Rennes Métropole in 2021, is now being transformed into a cultural space shaped with public participation. Officials said it is planned as a living cultural centre open to exhibitions, workshops, performances and active involvement by residents.
