Expanding its scope of work, Diyarbakır City Council has founded its 9th assembly. The City Council Language Assembly declared its establishment during its first ordinary meeting at the Çand Amed Culture and Congress Centre.
In addition to City Council members, the meeting was attended by Diyarbakır Metropolitan Municipality Council members Hakkı Kaya and Deniz Yalçın, representatives of civil society organisations, institutions working in the field of language, and Head of the Department of Culture and Social Affairs, Zeynep Yaş.
Following the opening speeches, a presiding board was formed. Board member Murat Işıkırık highlighted the mission of the assembly, underlining that policies would be developed in line with the city’s multilingual character. Işıkırık stated:
“The more language becomes part of daily life, the more it continues to thrive. That is why it is important to establish such an assembly within the City Council. All citizens who speak Kurmanji, Zazaki, Armenian and other languages can see themselves represented in this assembly.”
Participants also shared their opinions and suggestions regarding the activities and future of the Language Assembly.
The management of the Language Assembly was also determined, with 13 individuals from various institutions and organisations elected. The management will appoint its executive board at the meeting on 13 September.
