Diyarbakır Metropolitan Municipality Co-Mayor Serra Bucak met with women in Avcısuyu neighbourhood of Kayapınar district, stating that municipalities have dedicated units to resolve women’s issues.
The women’s gathering was organised in partnership with the Metropolitan Municipality’s Department of Women and Family Services and Kayapınar Municipality, and took place in Avcısuyu neighbourhood. The event was attended by Diyarbakır Metropolitan Municipality Co-Mayor Serra Bucak, DBB Council members Hacer Kurt and Canan Efe Şahin, Head of the Department of Women and Family Services Özden Gürbüz Sümer, Kayapınar Municipality’s Directorate of Women’s Policies and council members, along with many women from the neighbourhood.
During the event, women had the opportunity to directly voice the problems they face in social, economic and public life, while children took part in colouring activities.
At the gathering, where women expressed their demands and suggestions, solution proposals for the challenges they experience were also discussed.
Co-Mayor Bucak: We women are the true owners of life
Speaking at the event, Co-Mayor Serra Bucak greeted the women, expressing her great happiness at being there and emphasising the value of being their guest. Noting that they had taken note of the village’s problems, Co-Mayor Bucak stressed that women are the founders of life, and continued:
“Of course, regarding the problems, difficulties, demands and needs of the village, we are here today to take notes within the means of our Metropolitan Municipality and also Kayapınar Municipality. We will listen to you. We will give you our ear. Naturally, we already know the common problems of the village—roads, water, transport; these are issues that affect women most directly. Ultimately, we are the founders, the sustainers and the true owners of this life. We are women.”
‘There are institutions to address these issues’
Highlighting that women’s specific problems would also be addressed, Co-Mayor Bucak stated that alongside the village’s infrastructure issues, all difficulties and needs related to life directly concern them. She added:
“But we also have specific problems and difficulties stemming from being women. In both the Metropolitan and Kayapınar Municipalities, there are institutions and women to whom you can turn, capable of addressing women’s issues and challenges.”
‘We came here to listen to you’
Head of the Department of Women and Family Services, Özden Gürbüz Sümer, also touched upon the ongoing work of the municipality, saying:
“Together with DİKASUM and the Metropolitan Municipality’s Department of Women’s Policies, we have been in contact with your village for some time. We arranged such a meeting. Our colleagues will also talk about our work, but we mainly came here to listen to you.”
Following the speeches, brochures were distributed to the women attending the gathering.
