New facility that will double Diyarbakır’s drinking water capacity continues to take shape

With the construction of the 2nd Drinking Water Treatment Plant by Diyarbakır Water and Sewerage Administration (DİSKİ) under Diyarbakır Metropolitan Municipality, the city’s drinking water capacity is expected to double. As part of the project, 20 per cent of the treatment plant and 78 per cent of the 20,000-cubic-metre water reservoir have been completed.

Diyarbakır Water and Sewerage Administration (DİSKİ) is continuing construction of the 2nd Drinking Water Treatment Plant at the site of the Central Drinking Water Treatment Plant in order to meet Diyarbakır’s growing population and future water demand. Following the groundbreaking ceremony held on 31 October 2025, works began and around 20 per cent of the treatment plant construction has now been completed. Significant progress has also been made on the 20,000-cubic-metre drinking water reservoir being built as part of the same project, with 78 per cent of the structure now finished.

Diyarbakır’s treatment capacity will double

Once completed, the 2nd Drinking Water Treatment Plant will double Diyarbakır’s drinking water treatment capacity and provide long-term security for the city’s water infrastructure. The project will both ease the pressure on the existing drinking water system and establish a strong infrastructure to meet future water demand.

Works on the second transmission line are nearing completion

Work on the 2nd Drinking Water Transmission Line, which is being carried out simultaneously with the treatment plant, is also approaching its final stage. Once the line becomes operational, raw water will be conveyed to the treatment plant safely and without interruption. With the commissioning of the second-stage Drinking Water Treatment Plant and the second transmission line, Diyarbakır’s drinking water infrastructure will gain long-term capacity. Once these investments are completed, the aim is to provide a safe and sustainable solution to the city’s drinking water needs until 2060.

“We are working to ensure our city’s long-term water security”

Veysi Aktaş, Head of the Investments Branch under DİSKİ’s Department of Investment and Construction, said that the works were being carried out by the Investments Branch Directorate and made the following assessment of the project: “Our work on the 2nd Stage Drinking Water Treatment Plant at the site of the Central Drinking Water Treatment Plant is continuing in line with the planned schedule. While a certain level of progress has been achieved in the construction of the treatment plant, the 20,000-cubic-metre water reservoir included in the project has also been largely completed. Once this facility becomes operational together with the second transmission line being carried out simultaneously, Diyarbakır’s drinking water infrastructure will gain a much stronger capacity. The works under way aim to secure the city’s future water needs.”
