Diyarbakır Metropolitan Municipality delivered hot meals to more than 230,000 residents through iftar tents set up throughout Ramadan, while also expanding solidarity through food support provided to 2,000 families.
The Department of Social Services carried the unifying spirit of Ramadan across the city. As part of a comprehensive programme implemented throughout Diyarbakır, the iftar tents became meeting points for social solidarity and the culture of sharing.
Residents experienced the spirit of sharing together during Ramadan
The iftar tents, which drew strong interest from residents, operated at four locations: Koşuyolu Park, Ben û Sen Park, the Bağlar Tandoor House and Dağkapı Square.
Every day, thousands of residents gathered around the same table, where they were served three-course hot meals, dessert and beverages prepared with great care.
8,000 people served hot meals each day
Throughout Ramadan, the programme continued without interruption, providing hot meals to an average of 8,000 people per day and to more than 230,000 residents in total.
Teams worked intensively on the ground to ensure that residents could break their fast in a healthy and safe environment, maintaining the highest standards of hygiene and order.
Hygiene and food safety inspections at Aşxane
During Ramadan, teams from the Food Inspection Unit under the Department of Health Affairs carried out hygiene, quality and food safety inspections at Aşxane, located in the Sümerpark Common Living Space, where meals for the iftar tents were prepared.
Co-Mayors shared the same table with residents
Metropolitan Municipality Co-Mayors Serra Bucak and Doğan Hatun also visited the iftar tents frequently throughout Ramadan, joining residents at the same table. During the iftar programmes, the Co-Mayors spoke with residents, listened to their requests and suggestions, and underlined the importance of solidarity and sharing.
“We set tables that strengthened solidarity”
Providing information about the work carried out, Head of the Department of Social Services Ömer Saman said that, throughout Ramadan, iftar tents had been set up at four different locations in order to strengthen solidarity and emphasise the importance of sharing.
“We provided more than 230,000 meals”
Emphasising that social solidarity becomes tangible through such efforts, Saman said: “Over the course of one month, we provided more than 230,000 meals to our residents. In order to demonstrate the importance we attach to social solidarity together with our residents, we shared our warm tables together.”
Food support for 2,000 families
Saman noted that their work had not been limited to the iftar tents and also drew attention to social assistance efforts: “We continued our food aid programme during Ramadan, which we have been carrying out since January. So that we could all welcome the holiday in peace, we delivered food boxes and Ramadan aid packages to around 2,000 families in need.”
“The work will continue”
Saman stated that, as the Department of Social Services, they would continue working to diversify social service policies in a way that upholds human dignity and to deliver these services to all residents.
