Diyarbakır Metropolitan Municipality has strengthened the city’s green transformation by planting 5,016 trees over the past year and distributing 6,930 saplings free of charge, in line with its goal of reducing water consumption and creating ecological green spaces through plant production.
The Metropolitan Municipality is continuing its work through a holistic parks and gardens policy that prioritises ecological balance, water efficiency and the sustainable creation of green spaces across the city. Aiming to build a city that is resilient in the face of the climate crisis and the risk of drought, the Municipality is implementing projects focused on protecting local species, expanding practices that reduce water use, and increasing public green spaces, in a process extending from plant production to landscape arrangements. The work carried out within this approach not only enhances the city’s appearance, but also sets out a long-term vision of green transformation that supports ecological life and is in harmony with nature.
The Department of Parks and Gardens is continuing its work in this area without slowing down.
In addition to Iranian pine and blue cypress saplings grown in the greenhouses of the Sapling and Afforestation Branch Directorate in Şilbe TOKİ, Yenişehir district, other trees supplied by the Municipality have also helped enrich the city’s green fabric. Within the planned schedule, a total of 5,016 trees were planted.
Water-efficiency policy shaped the choice of species
In line with the Metropolitan Municipality’s policy of protecting water resources, teams opted for drought-resistant tree species. As part of this approach, priority was given during planting works to species that require less water, with intensive efforts carried out in the autumn and spring seasons.
As part of the afforestation works, teams planted 5,016 trees, including blue cypress, plane-leaved mulberry, flame tree, ornamental pear, crape myrtle, oleander and ash.
Taking into account traffic and pedestrian density across the city in its landscaping works, the Department of Parks and Gardens assessed each route individually and developed tree-planting designs suited to the character of each area.
Shade coverage increased with broad-leaved trees
Aiming to create more shaded areas in view of high temperatures in the city, the Department of Parks and Gardens prioritised the planting of broad-leaved trees suited to the character of avenues, boulevards and streets.
Pedestrian and traffic safety prioritised
Focusing its landscaping works particularly in newly developed areas, the teams carried out tree planting at junctions, medians and pavements. In line with safety standards, low-growing tree species were preferred at junction points in order not to obstruct sightlines for pedestrians and drivers.
6,930 saplings suited to the city’s climate distributed free of charge
Selecting the species best suited to Diyarbakır’s climate, the Metropolitan Municipality also responded to requests from public institutions, district municipalities and residents. In this context, Iranian pine and blue cypress saplings produced by the Municipality were distributed free of charge for use in different locations across the city.
As part of its sapling distribution activities, the Department of Parks and Gardens delivered a total of 6,930 saplings free of charge, including 2,925 to district municipalities and public institutions, and 4,005 to residents.
Afforestation efforts continue
The Department of Parks and Gardens, which continues to enhance the city with plants produced in-house and supplied externally, will continue its afforestation works.
