DMM staff receive Psychological First Aid training

Diyarbakır Metropolitan Municipality delivered Psychological First Aid (PFA) training to staff to strengthen their ability to respond appropriately and effectively in times of crisis.

Organised by the Department of Social Services and delivered over two days by expert trainer Zehra Gizem Ocak, the course provided a comprehensive programme focused on developing sound approaches in situations involving crisis and trauma. Participants were briefed on the core methods of psychological first aid, the stages of the intervention process, and the psychosocial impacts of crisis and trauma. Interactive scenario-based exercises were also used to create a participatory learning environment, enabling staff to share their experiences and recommendations.

‘Psychological first aid is practical support’

Trainer Ocak underlined that psychological first aid is a humane, supportive and practical intervention for people experiencing crisis or trauma. She noted that it includes ensuring safety, facilitating access to basic needs, using calming and active listening techniques, signposting appropriately, and preventing further harm. Emphasising that psychological first aid is not a form of therapy, Ocak said: “This is not an intervention that only specialists can deliver; it is not about making people recount what they have lived through or analysing their emotions. Nor can it ever be a coercive or suppressive practice.”

Emphasis on timing and a safe space

Ocak highlighted the importance of delivering psychological first aid immediately after a crisis or traumatic event, in an environment where the individual feels safe. She said the aim is to help individuals meet their basic needs, enable access to sources of physical and emotional support, and support them in regaining a sense of control.

Two-day programme completed

The first day concluded with scenario applications and evaluation sessions. On the second day, the training was completed with sessions on “Facilitation/Training Skills” and “Psychological Self-Care”. The programme aims to equip municipal staff to take a more competent, informed and supportive approach during crises.
