Recyclable waste from 15 housing estates fed into recycling system

Diyarbakır Metropolitan Municipality has installed recycling units in 15 housing estates in Kayapınar district, informing 10,000 residents and starting to feed source-separated waste into the city’s recycling system.

The Department of Climate Change and Zero Waste continues its efforts to protect sustainable ecosystems, increase biodiversity and reduce environmental pollution. Within this scope, work has begun on a project, coordinated by the department and carried out in cooperation with Kayapınar Municipality, to establish infrastructure for source separation and recycling. Teams identified 15 pilot housing estates in Kayapınar and installed recycling units at these locations. Through this work, waste is now being integrated into the recycling system.

10,000 residents informed

Around 10,000 residents living in the 15 housing estates have been informed about source separation and recycling. By separating waste at home and leaving packaging waste in these units, residents have begun to contribute to the integration of recyclables into the city’s recycling system.

Inspections carried out at the residential complexes

Head of the Department of Climate Change and Zero Waste Evin Dinar, Kayapınar Municipality Co-Mayor’s Deputy Volkan Tuncer, Head of Cleaning Affairs Department Sait Karataş and technical teams carried out inspections at the estates where the work has started. Children living in the estates were given seed-embedded pencils and rulers produced from recycled materials as gifts.

‘The aim is proper separation’

Providing information about the initiative, Head of the Department of Climate Change and Zero Waste Evin Dinar said the work was being carried out jointly with Kayapınar Municipality. She stated that they aim to promote proper separation of waste across the city and continued:

“Not all waste is rubbish. When plastic, paper, glass, metal and organic waste are not correctly separated, they cannot be reused or recycled. This is one of the main causes of the climate crisis. These days, when we are all talking about the climate crisis, one of the key issues is in fact our consumption habits.”

‘The work will be expanded’

Explaining that they plan to extend the initiative across the city, Dinar said:

“Today, together with Kayapınar Municipality, we have launched this work to draw attention to our consumption habits and to ensure proper separation of waste. It is a fact that correctly separating waste in our homes, workplaces and schools saves energy and protects nature. Therefore, our goal is to cooperate with all our district municipalities to separate and reduce waste city-wide and to transform our consumption habits. For this work, we identified 15 pilot housing estates in cooperation with Kayapınar Municipality. When the separation bins placed in these 15 pilot estates are properly filled, they are collected by the vehicles of Kayapınar Municipality.”
