Co-Mayor Hatun attends declaration on Kurdish-language demands

Diyarbakır Metropolitan Municipality Co-Mayor Doğan Hatun took part in a public statement on the Kurdish language, issued by 750 institutions including civil society organisations and political parties.

Under the leadership of the Social Initiative for the Kurdish Language, 750 institutions – among them civil society organisations and political parties – announced a declaration setting out their demands regarding Kurdish at Ekin Park in the Kayapınar district. The event was attended by Diyarbakır Metropolitan Municipality Co-Mayor Doğan Hatun, MPs, DBB Council Co-Spokesperson Demet Ceylan, council members, co-mayors of district municipalities, and representatives of civil society organisations and political parties.

In the declaration, it was stressed that all languages are fundamental values of humanity, and the following demands were put forward:

“Kurdish must be officially recognised and granted constitutional status. Kurdish must be a language of instruction at every stage of education, from pre-school to university. All place and object names that were originally in Kurdish but have been translated into Turkish must be restored to Kurdish. All legal and de facto obstacles to Kurdish must be removed, and Kurdish must be free and unrestricted everywhere. In order for the Kurdish language to be permanently free and unrestricted, Kurdish identity must be placed under constitutional protection.”
