Hundreds of expired products seized during inspections at one business

During inspections carried out to protect public health, Diyarbakır Metropolitan Municipality teams seized and destroyed a large number of food products found on sale at one business despite being past their expiry date.

During inspections conducted by the Municipal Police Department and the Department of Health Affairs, it was found that products past their use-by date were being offered for sale at a food retail business. As part of the inspection process carried out under Law No. 6502 on the Protection of Consumers, products unlawfully kept on the shelves were examined one by one.

The inspections found that a large number of products across a wide range of categories were past their expiry date, including milk and dairy products, breakfast items, beverages, herbal products, pulses, as well as cleaning and cosmetic goods. These products, which posed a risk to public health, were recorded and taken into custody for destruction.

Hundreds of products seized

The teams’ inspection found that hundreds of products in different categories were past their expiry date. In particular, milk, cheese, yoghurt, beverages, varieties of tea, coffee products, jam, honey, molasses, sauces and various packaged food items were found to be unlawfully kept on the premises, along with some cosmetic and cleaning products.

Legal action taken

A detailed report was prepared for the products identified, and the necessary administrative procedures were initiated in accordance with the relevant legislation. Following the inspection, legal action was taken against the business for keeping products past their expiry date in a manner that endangered public health.

Inspections to continue

The Municipal Police Department stated that inspections would continue uninterrupted across the city in order to ensure that the public has access to safe and reliable food. Residents were also urged to remain vigilant and check expiry dates when shopping.
