On the occasion of 21 February International Mother Language Day, Diyarbakır Metropolitan Municipality distributed shop signs written in Kurdish to tradespeople in Sur district.
The Metropolitan Municipality’s Department of Culture and Social Affairs, in cooperation with the Sur Municipality’s Department of Culture, organised an event on Gazi Avenue in Sur district to mark International Mother Language Day.
The event was attended by Sur Municipality Co-Mayor Adnan Örhan, Diyarbakır Metropolitan Municipality Head of the Department of Culture and Social Affairs Zeynep Yaş, Head of the Department of Press, Publications and Public Relations Berivan Güneş, as well as council members.
During the event, accompanied by frame drums, brochures in Kurdish, “open/closed” shop signs, badges and stickers raising awareness about language sensitivity were distributed to shopkeepers and residents.
Sur Municipality Co-Mayor Örhan and the Metropolitan Municipality department heads conversed with the tradespeople, emphasised the importance of the mother language, and distributed the signs they had brought with them.
