Diyarbakır Metropolitan Municipality marked World Food Day on 16 October with an event aimed at raising awareness of healthy eating, offering milk to students and residents.
Organised by the Department of Health Affairs at Koşuyolu Park in Bağlar district, the activity highlighted the importance of access to nutritious food by distributing milk and bananas. Leaflets were also handed out to underline key messages on food safety.
Observed in more than 150 countries, World Food Day is commemorated across Türkiye with a range of activities. In Diyarbakır, the annual programme seeks to prevent food waste and promote access to safe and healthy food. Embracing a “from farm to fork” approach, the Metropolitan Municipality aims to build public awareness on food safety from production through to consumption.
Speaking at the event, Vahap Saçaklı, Head of the Department of Health Affairs, said:
“As Diyarbakır Metropolitan Municipality, we mark World Food Day each year with a series of activities. Today, by offering nutritious foods to our students, we want both to underline the importance of healthy eating and to raise awareness. Our food inspection teams work throughout the year, and through events like this we will continue to inform the public.”
