DBŞT Brings a World Classic to Theatre-Goers with a Kurdish Adaptation

Diyarbakır Metropolitan Municipality City Theatre (DBŞT) is bringing William Shakespeare’s world-renowned A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Xewna Şeveke Havînê) to the stage in a Kurdish adaptation. The premiere will take place at 20:30 on 27 February at the Çand Amed Culture and Congress Centre.

DBŞT is staging Shakespeare’s romantic comedy—often described as a fairy tale for adults—in a Kurdish adaptation. Directed by Ferhad Feqî, the production features Berfin Emektar, Halit Aslan, Mesut Erenci, Nurşen Adıgüzel, Nazmi Karaman, Özcan Ateş, Ömer Akkan, Perînaz Delazy, Sena Özbey, Sakîna Aktaş, Şahperî Alphan, Şehabettin Dağ, Yavuz Akkuzu and Zeycan Ateş.

Synopsis

Set in a forest, the play tells the story of people rendered foolish amid the gods’ struggle for power. As enchantments shift hands throughout the story, love is thrown into confusion; friend and foe, right and wrong become entangled. In the finale, the charms find their proper place, the lovers are correctly paired, and all the strangeness caused by the magic is ultimately covered over by a dream.

‘Answers are sought in an entertaining way’

Director Ferhad Feqî highlighted the strong meaning of the forest metaphor in the play, saying:

“Sometimes it feels as if we have been bewitched. Our minds are manipulated. We confuse friend and enemy and become unable to tell black from white. We chase after impossible loves. Are the codes hidden in the forest we call the subconscious sometimes what emerges and casts this spell on us—those who play with our minds? If so, who are they? Where do they come from, and how have they settled into our subconscious?”

Feqî added that the production seeks answers to these questions in an entertaining way, and that they are inviting audiences to join this intellectual journey.
